Trouble editing references in Word document from a colleague
A colleague of mine used Zotero to insert references into a manuscript he sent me. I also have Zotero installed on my machine and have the same references in my library. However, when I go to add a reference somewhere in the document that has already been added by my colleague, Zotero gives it a new reference #. It is not realizing that the references my colleague added are the same ones I already have. I tried looking in my duplicate items section in Zotero but nothing was there. This is very strange behavior and I was wondering if anyone knows a workaround? Thanks!

you should be able to select items already cited in the document under a "Cited" heading. That should typically work for co-authoring.
If you select items that you imported into your library, though, Zotero won't recognize them as "the same" item -- from Zotero's perspective, they're different items unless they have the same (unique) internal ID. The only way to actually insert items from a shared library in Zotero is using groups (https://www.zotero.org/support/groups ), which you'd want to do from the start. You can't do it restroactively with a document.
