Keep only Zotero Standalone and deprecate Zotero for Firefox.

edited October 16, 2016
Zotero come in two different versions: Zotero Standalone and Zotero for Firefox. I think this situation is confusing particularly for new users.

Having only the standalone version would bring the following benefit:

1) Same experience in all browsers.
2) Clear separation of responsibility: Zotero manage your library, the plugin let you import stuff in Zotero.
3) No more migration from Firefox extension to standalone.
4) Educate user for the future: XULRunner is almost dead and Firefox is moving to webextension this is how it's going to be in the future anyway.
5) Today, the standalone also need a Firefox extension witch is the same than the Zotero for Firefox... this is very confusing for new user.
6) Redirect effort in the development of the webextension (which is in fact compatible with the chrome extension)

This subject was already addressed in the middle of some thread, but I wanted to bring this question more clearly.
  • The Firefox version has some functionality that is useful that can't be included in Standalone for technical reasons. That said, Mozilla has deprecated the technologies Zotero relies on, so in the next major version of Zotero after the upcoming 5.0 release, Zotero will be moving to a new platform and becoming Standalone-only.
