I am suddenly having issues with opening downloaded references in Zotero on a Macbook. The downloaded files are nbib files and every time I click a file to open, it requires me to select an application. I was able to open them prior to this without going through these steps. For each reference, the two extra steps are costing me time. Furthermore, and this may be related to the OS rather than to Zotero, the choose the application window is opening up behind the browser, so each time I have to minimize my browser to choose the application.
  • I don't think Zotero has ever been configured to open .nbib files. I'm surprised that works at all, but to the extent it does, it's a setting in your OS, not something Zotero does (it's easy to google how to associate any given file type or extension with a given application in your OS).

You're aware that the default way to import files from pubmed would be via the "Save to Zotero" button in your browser and that you can import files using "Import" from Zotero's gear menu?
  • Thank you. I will check out both solutions.
  • As adamsmith says, you should use the Zotero button in your browser to import PubMed records. One click is all it takes. Or, you can use the Zotero folder icon to import several PubMed records. Downloading nbib files is not only inconvenient, less compatible, and messy; the content of nbib files will be less complete than if you use the Zotero download button.
  • (there are situations where downloading from Pubmed makes sense, e.g. when trying to import hundreds of items at once. In those cases, use the XML export, not nbib, for better results. That import is equivalent to using the Zotero button)
  • @adamsmith XML export is the way to go when importing records in bulk. On the average day I download 350+ PubMed records via their xml file option. It works flawlessly. I didn't understand that vsamarth was downloading scores of records at a time. However, as this is read by others, your point is well taken.
  • I have recently downloaded zotero after deleting the previous version of it. I am having trouble with adding references in microsoft word. On clicking add citation, zotero is not opening. I have downloaded microsoft winword pluggin too but it is of no use.
