Field Codes & Hyperlinks

My apologies upfront for this being a two-fer question. I had a student approach me with some problems she was encountering in Zotero, of which I had no idea how to solve. Any help would be most welcome.

First issue, the student had been using Zotero for a while and noticed that whenever a footnote is entered in Word, it produces the reference as well as a bunch of field code stuff as well; the field code can be deleted with the "Remove Field Code" icon. Is there a way you can disable / change the preference so that the field code isn't added to the footnote in the first place?

Second issue, when the student adds a hyperlink to the Word document, it adds the word HYPERLINK before the actual url. Any ideas as to why that is happening and can that be corrected to not do it anymore?

Try pressing Alt-F9 on Windows or Option-F9 (or Option-Function-9) on OS X. This should switching between the raw field code and regular view. See e.g. https://support.office.com/en-us/article/Insert-and-format-field-codes-in-Word-2010-7e9ea3b4-83ec-4203-9e66-4efc027f2cf3#bm1 for more background.

If this affects all documents, you might have to uncheck a setting in Word to use raw field codes by default. For e.g. Word 2007, see http://mikefrobbins.com/2010/05/10/how-to-toggle-field-codes-off-or-on-in-word/.

(and you should be aware that all the footnotes where you manually deleted the field codes are "broken" for Zotero purposes, i.e. they will not update either citation style or with changes to the Zotero item; I'd also be a little concerned that you may have corrupted the document by manually editing Word Fields -- but if you can still insert citations with Zotero, you're probably fine.
