One cited document, two bibliography entries.

Having started a document 2 years ago and then returned to it recently, I have now discovered that, when citing a document already cited before, a second entry appears for it in the bibliography.

I wonder if the problem has arisen because, a few months ago, I bought a new computer and migrated my Zotero database by copying and pasting the relevant files, which I now understand is not the way to do these things.

Am I right in thinking that this explains the problem I'm having and is there any simple way round it?
  • Either copying/pasting files or using the sync mechanism preserve record identities. Importing/exporting does not.

There is no easy way to fix things if you have used import/export. You must replace entries manually (either the new ones by selecting the versions embedded in the document (though this would not allow for updating the records, it may be slightly easier if you have a very small numer of changes to make) or the old citations with your new references (especially advisable if you anticipate a large number of changes (lots of added references, re-use in future documents, etc.)).
  • Thanks, but I'm fairly sure I used copying/pasting rather than import/export. Is there any way of confirming either way? Secondly, if I did use copying/pasting, have you any ideas why the 2nd bibliography entry is happening? The 2 entries appear absolutely identical.
  • Either you followed the directions at https://www.zotero.org/support/zotero_data#restoring_your_zotero_library_from_a_backup or you did not; I'm not sure of a good way for you to check.

For troubleshooting word documents, refer to https://www.zotero.org/support/word_processor_plugin_troubleshooting

The most likely issues are that you're citing multiple versions of the same reference (possibly due to incorrectly transferring your library, but maybe because you have or had multiple versions of the reference saved) or the old reference is broken in some way. In any case, manually replacing the references may be the most expedient fix.
  • Okay, thanks. I'll look into this.
