Upgrade StorageTransfering Edited Fields With Files Between Main And Shared Group Libraries
I'm trying to figure out how to (if its even possible) bring edits made to a file in a group library back to the original file in my library.
I'm using the Firefox plugin 4.0.29.11 on a MacBook Pro running Yosemite 10.10.5 (in case that's needed)
I have some virtual assistants who help me save time by going in and making sure all the fields are correct (authors, etc) for those that don't import with proper metadata.
So I created a shared library for them and pulled the files from my library into that folder. Both show in my Firefox. But when they edit the file, I can see the changed in the group library but the file in mine is unaffected. However, if I try to drag the file from theirs back into mine, it behaves as if the exact file is already in there.
I even tried as an experiment deleting the original in my library and then bringing in the edited file.
It did let me drag it in at that point but then popped up with the old information.
I don't know f this is making any sense. I don't want to work directly out of the shared library as if someone makes a mistake, I want to have my originals protected.
I have found a bit of a workaround, but it's a few additional steps. If I export the files from the shared library and import them into my library, they will enter as new files. Then I "merge" those one by one with my originals, selected the edited files as the "dominant" ones.
I'm not sure if that's the best option for now.

What's going on is that items dragged from the group to the personal library are entirely separate items (i.e. don't update mutually when one is changed) _except_ for the fact that Zotero is still aware that they're the same item, so you can't drag an item you copied to a group back to My Library (and vice versa).
So currently either your workaround or deleting the original item in My Library, emptying your Zotero trash, and then dragging the item from the group are the only ways to achieve what you want.
What I hope will be implemented in the future is that dragging the item from the group would update the original item in My Library -- can't give you an ETA for that, though, sorry.
