Linux PDF indexing - downloading hangs

Apologies if this has been previously solved (I tried a few posts, but my problem persisted). PDF indexing and tagging is not working on my setup. I understand that I need the pdf tools installed (http://www.zotero.org/support/pdf_fulltext_indexing), and when I look at my prefs it says: pdftotext version is UNKNOWN and pdfinfo-Linux-i686 is NOT INSTALLED. When I click "CHECK FOR UPDATE" it says "Downloading" and seems to freeze.

I am using Ubuntu 8.10 on Firefox 3.07, and I would be grateful for any help.
