Open PDFs in Mac Preview instead of Acrobat Reader

Hi All,
Is it possible to open pdf files linked from zotero in Mac Preview instead in Acrobat? Preview allows to markup and comment pdf files which I think is a great feature and a significant addition to entire Zotero functionality.
At the moment Zotero seems to by default use Acrobat Reader and I wasn't able to change it.

Thank you
Anna
  • The program used to open file types is decided by Firefox and/or your operating system. I'm honestly a little fuzzy on how the two decide on conflicts, but here's how to set it in each one. Some combination of these should do the trick.

In the OS: Right-click on a PDF file and click "Get Info". In the little window that pops up, there will be a line marked "Open with". You may need to press the little grey arrow to see everything in this section. Click on the drop-down list and select which program you want to use (Preview, in this case). Once you've selected it, click the "Change All" button to make this the default for all PDF files on your system.

In Firefox: Open Firefox's Preferences window. Click on the Applications tab, then type "Portable" in the search bar or scroll down to "Portable Document Format". Click on the drop-down list beside this and select the program you want Firefox to use to handle these files (again, Preview).

That should cover all the bases, but I've found that opening PDFs from Firefox (which includes Zotero) can be a little inconsistent, sometimes opening with one program, sometimes another. It's usually just a conflict between Acrobat Reader and Acrobat Pro. I suppose I should just delete Reader. If you're using Preview exclusively, I doubt you'll have a problem.
  • It worked like a charm :) I changed the Get Info-Open with. Thanks a lot.
