I discovered that simply removing words with certain non-standard characters (such as ǆ and ń) from the filename immediately resolves the problem with the specific PDFs. I then put the removed characters back. This may be something to be addressed at Zotero's end rather than xpdfreader's.

I agree that this is needed and 'appears' that it would be easy to add. Can someone on staff state if this request/addition is on the radar at all for inclusion?
