Diacritical marks (again)

As a windows 7 user, Allchars doesn't work for me. Does anyone have a solution for entering diacritical marks? Needing to copy-paste them is a deal-breaker for me using Zotero (I just switched from endnote, but need an easy way to enter accents without remapping my keyboard)
  • My solution is a keyboard toggle (in Windows) between regular and international, not sure if that's an option for you -- works well for me and also extends to other applications e.g. writing in the browser or e-mail.

IIRC, Endnote just implements the Word shortcuts, right? I don't think we'll want to do that.

Adam, thanks I figured it out.

Out of curiosity, why would it be a problem to implement Word shortcuts? That would be an easy solution (from this user's perspective)
  • See here for multiple keyboards on Windows: http://www.digitalcitizen.life/how-change-keyboard-input-language

A major reason not to implement the Word shortcuts is simply that they're arbitrary/non-standard and as such may even be confusing when things suddenly happen that are not expected.
Beyond that, it's also just that it's a lot of work to implement and should really happen at the level of the operating system. I think keyboard switching mostly does the job nicely, though I wish Windows would implement something more convenient for people doing this only occasionally (*nix systems do this smoothly; see e.g. https://www.reed.edu/cis/help/diacritics.html for Mac. This is how this should work).
  • Thank you Adam. I just started using the international keyboard....and am completely swayed.
