default browser not used when opening external links

When using Zotero standalone in KDE, Zotero opens external links ("View online" or double-click entry) with Firefox, regardless of the default browser chosen in the KDE prefs (in this case Chrome).

Expected behaviour would be to open external links with the defauls browser instead of Firefox.

  • (maybe someone happens to know the answer to this on KDE, but tbh, I wouldn't get my hopes up. Zotero uses a standard mozilla function for all file opening operations, but file handling across linux distros -- and for KDE in particular -- is such a mess that we're lucky if it works for PDFs. You can see if the info we have for that helps you further: https://www.zotero.org/support/kb/file_handling_issues#pdfs_opening_in_wrong_application_on_gnulinux_systems )
  • thanks for the input. Is there a way that mime types can be configured for zotero standalone, in a text file?
  • no, not at this point. It's been requested (mainly so people can define a different PDF reader from the system default) and I think Dan is generally OK with it, but I'm not aware of any work being done.

As I said, this does use some specification of a default html application somewhere on your system, but who knows where...
  • With my KDE (ubuntu 18.04), I succeeded in modifying this behaviour in the KDE settings:
System Settings -> Applications -> Default Applications -> Web Browser
Under "open http and https URLS..." select "in the following application" and select "google chrome" in the drop down box.
