pdf metadata, and Papers vs. Zotero

I'm trying to retrieve the metadata for pdfs. The zotero website says to right click on the pdf (I have a mac, so am doing control click), and that "retrieve metadata" should be one of the options. When I do this, that is not one of the options that appears. Could someone help me with this?

Also, I would be grateful for any insight on Zotero and Papers, how to sync the two, or whether using both is superfluous.

    @1 - the pdf needs to be an independent item in Zotero - i.e. not already be the attachment to an item. You can achieve that using drag&drop.

    @2 - my sense is (without knowing papers very well) that Zotero does pretty much everything papers does, plus a lot more (especially wrt word-processor integration) - so I would say don't use both.

    PDF metadata recognition is only in Zotero 1.5, now in beta.
