Complete database disintegration disaster possible? Precautions?

At the moment Zotero works, no problem. But as an informed optimist, aka pessimist, I expect that some day the database etc may disintegrate completely and I end up with many subdirs with letter/number names not knowing what is in them and the dir/subdir structure I had created being completely gone. So the collected pdf files etc would be present on my computer but their exact location unknown. Is such a scenario possible, has anybody experienced it? How can I protect my data against it except backup of my system every day?
