How to add editorial comments within a citation (modify it) but allow Zotero to change citations

Hi All-

Forgive me if this has been discussed here before.

I'm using a Zotero standalone version on a Mac.

I'm wondering if there's a way to include editorial comments within a Zotero citation (modify it) in a way that preserves those comments in the footnote but also allows Zotero to adjust the citation itself when it refreshes.

For example, if I cite three sources in a footnote, but want to include a sentence or two between each actual citation, I type that material between the citations themselves in the footnote. But then, if I adjust my citation order or otherwise refresh Zotero, it seems my only choice is to keep these modifications and the citation itself as-is, or to remove them all. As a result, I have to choose between losing Zotero's ability to adjust (shorten) a citation in that footnote if I've used that source before OR lose my editorial comments and let the citation adjust.

I hope this makes sense. Looking forward to your help,
