Zotero & Word 2016: References lost

I have word 2016 and have Zotero installed. Previously, I was having no issue referencing my work in Word and I was also able to create the bibliography.

However, now that I return to Word a few days later, all my citations start from [1] again...

Also, I can no longer create a bibliography because, well, it thinks that I have no citations (I believe).

When I click the "Edit Bibliography" button, I am greeted with: You must insert a bibliography before performing this operation.

It seems that Word has "lost" my bibliography...

Has anyone had this issue before and knows how to resolve it?
  • First thing to test would be whether everything is working for you in a new document (i.e insert references, save & close doc, reopen, insert more refs, insert bibliography).

If so, then the Word integration itself is fine and most likely your field codes in Word (i.e. the hidden places where Zotero saves citatino information) have gotten removed in a specific document. The ways this is most likely to happen is
    1) if the document has been opened in different software (LibreOffice, GoogleDocs, Pages)
    2) if the document has been saved in a format that doesn't support fields (.odt, .rtf)
  • Hi,

I may have opened the document in GoogleDocs (don't remember).

Is there a way to recover lost field codes?
  • not without a backup of the document, no, I'm afraid.
  • Wow. Okay, thanks.
  • **Update**

Okay, there is something wrong here. I just went and redid all my references and all was working as expected. I saved the Word document, closed it, reopened it and I have the same issue again... Word 2016 is not remembering my Bibliography.

When I click insert bibliography, I get {Bibliography}. When I try and edit my bibliography, it says that I must first insert one...

    Does anyone have any ideas?
  • which format are you saving to? (.doc, .docx?)
When you press alt+F9 (Mac: alt+FN+F9) do you see field codes showing up in the document?
  • Hmm, I created this document in Word and just click "save". However, looking at the document type, it says that it is an OpenDocument Text file (.odt).

As for the codes, I do not see any when I press alt+F9.
  • I tried saving as a .docx and now I just get text when I try to insert a bibliography:

    {ADDIN ZOTERO_BIBL {"uncited":[["http://zotero.org/users/2568445/items/77ZQAI62"],["http://zotero.org/users/2568445/items/EQ873FU8"],["http://zotero.org/users/2568445/items/NHFUV6GA"],["http://zotero.org/users/2568445/items/NMZZXQQB"],["http://zotero.org/users/2568445/items/Q7ECN7SD"],["http://zotero.org/users/2568445/items/WA9ZC95I"],["http://zotero.org/users/2568445/items/J9HQJCJM"],["http://zotero.org/users/2568445/items/NKV6GP58"],["http://zotero.org/users/2568445/items/SD9FRT9V"],["http://zotero.org/users/2568445/items/HHR4SBIM"],["http://zotero.org/users/2568445/items/P3BQNHVZ"],["http://zotero.org/users/2568445/items/NNN33WXW"],["http://zotero.org/users/2568445/items/MB4IVUA7"]],"custom":[]} CSL_BIBLIOGRAPHY }
  • just hit alt+F9 again, that's just a display issue. And yes, losing field codes would be expected when you save as .odt.
  • Unfortunately, alt+F9 still does not do anything. Is there a menu option I can navigate to, rather than using the hotkeys?

OpenText document is the default file type in Word 2016, in case anyone experiences this.
  • no, odt is most certainly not the default file type in Word 2016. All Word versions since 2011 default to .docx (and before that defaulted to .doc). I can't tell you why your Word defaults to .odt -- you'll probably want to track the cause of this down, it's very much not normal.

You can toggle field codes under File --> Options --> Advanced --> Show document content --> "Show field codes instead of their values" (should be unchecked)
  • (though if you open an .odt document, Word will probably save it as odt again by default -- as it should -- I thought it'd display a warning, but maybe not).
  • Thanks for your help. I redid the citations again... but this time as a .docx and now it works, finally!
