How does Zotero link a reference list to a document

Dear All

I can't work out if this is a stupid question or not, but how does Zotero link a specific reference list to a specific document? For example, I write a paper at home on LibreOffice and use Zotero all on one computer. Then I take my document to work and use LibreOffice again using a different computer and my synced reference list; how will the document know I am using a specific reference list, how does it know which list to look in for the references?

This works fine if you use Zotero's syncing capabilities. References have a unique identifier that gets synced in this process.

N.B.: It does not survive on import/export, though (many formats have no way of storing it and there'd be no easy way to guarantee that it could remain unique on import (e.g. if references were already present).
