Chrome hangs temporarily after installing extension

I searched but didn't see an exixsting thread on this topic. Sorry if I missed it.
I recently installed the Zotero extension for Chrome (Version 48.0.2564.109 m; Windows 10). After installation, upon launching a new session Chrome hangs temporarily on a white screen with the message "Processing request" in the status bar at the bottom of the screen. I'd say the hang lasts for approx 60-90 seconds, though I haven't timed it. After the hang concludes, the homepage loads.
Disabling the Zotero extension eliminates this behavior, so I'm pretty sure it's related to the extension.
Any help at resolving this issue would be appreciated. Thanks.
