Upgrade Storagerandom footnote formatting

I have a problem with Zotero citations in my footnotes, using LibreOffice Version: 4.4.4.3.
When I use the Zotero plugin to put references in my footnotes, I lose them after closing the document. The text, e.g. "blah (1950, p.2)", is still there but it is no longer shaded in grey. There is only a small grey box behind the citation. Hovering over them with the cursor lets the reference box pop up, but when I click on the edit button I get the message that I need to put my cursor over a Zotero citation. The box itself is also, but only sometimes, protected from change, so erasing it doesn't always work.
I haven't finished the document yet, so I don't know if the references in the footnotes appear in the bibliography or not. Can anyone help?
