Question marks appearing in citation

Zotero just updated to 4.0.28.8. I restated word and inserted a citation, however, the formatting was off in word. Rather than semicolons, question marks appeared. Titles of books weren't italicized.

Basically, it looks crazy and I have a paper due tomorrow.

I'm using Word 2008 for mac, version 12.3.6
  • Very unlikely the new Zotero version (which has been out for 2 months without such complaints) would have caused this.
Is this the case in a new document, too? Which citation style?
  • Not a new document. I wrote the document using the previous version of zotero a few days ago. I quit Zotero and when I reopened, it updated. With the new version (and restarted word), I inserted a new footnote and had this problem. All the other footnotes created using the previous version of Zotero remained fine.

    I'm using Chicago.
  • Sorry for the delay, have you tried the same item you're citing in a fresh document for testing (I realize you need your old doc to work, but how this behaves in a new one will help a lot to understand where that problem is coming. )?
  • Try changing your computer and Word character set to UTF8 if the above doesn't work. Zotero should be outputting letters, numbers, and punctuation in UTF8 format. Sometimes Word or Windows on their own revert to Win-1252. If this happened Word will not recognize some of the Zotero characters and will replace the unrecognized ones with question marks or crazy characters.

Make copies of the original version and each iteration of your work.

Zotero hasn't changed the character set it uses through many past versions.
