turabian; short form and ibid

Dear all,

For some reason or another my Zotero doesn't use the short form of the citation when I'm citing the same source twice consecutively. So, it formats things like this:

1) Full note.
2) Ibid.

instead of the proper way of doing things (in Turabian style that is):

1) Full note.
2) Short form.
3) Ibid. (In case a source is cited three times in a row)

Somehow I'm the only one experiencing this. My fellow students who use Zotero are not experiencing any trouble.

Any thoughts?

Thanks :)
  • are you sure that is the rule? I don't have Turabian here right now, but it a) seems very odd to me and b) is not what the Chicago Manual, on which Turabian is based, does.
So I'd double check this rule. If that's indeed the rule, Zotero can't actually do this (so I'm sure it's the same for your classmates), but I'd be very surprised if it is.
  • Thanks adamsmith for your quick response,

Once again it seems you're right. Turabian doesn't explicitly say that this is the way to do things. It does provide a very unhelpful example in the 16.4.2 Ibid. section:

    30) Buchan, Advice to Mothers, 71.
    31) Ibid., 95.
    32) Ibid.

They should probably change this example for clarity's sake. I guess (the non-existing) note 29 is another work forcing 30 to use the short form of an earlier cited work. Yikes...

    Thanks adamsmith ;)
