Styles not installing

While installing styles on my Zotero Standalone, the message below pops up, I dont know how to resolve it. I am using Zotero 4.0.28.7.

If someone can help, it would be much appriciated.

An unexpected error occurred while installing "(null)"
  • If you have any custom styles, back them up, then try resetting your styles from the advanced tab of the ZOtero preferences and try again. Does that work?
  • I did that and it still shows the same message :(
  • 1) If you have any ZOtero add-ons, disable them and try again
    2) How exactly are you installing styles and which?
    3) Could we get a debug ID that covers such a failed attempt to install?
    https://www.zotero.org/support/debug_output
  • Step 1: I disabled Zotero add-ons on both chrome and firefox
Step 2: Downloaded this .cls file (https://www.zotero.org/styles/?q=journal of membrane science)
    Step 3: Enabled debug output
Step 4: Opened preferences, then cite, then styles, clicked the + button and clicked on the .cls file, but the same message came: An unexpected error occurred while installing "(null)"
Step 6: Tried to submit the debug output log to Zotero Server (didn't work), so followed instructions on Error Submitting a Debug Log (https://www.zotero.org/support/debug_output). But it still didn't work.

So I am copy pasting the code here. So sorry, I dont know what is happening.

  • OK, so as an immediate fix, you can download the style linked in the error message and install that (it's the same as the journal of membrane studies), i.e. http://www.zotero.org/styles/elsevier-with-titles

It does seem, though, that there's a more general problem of your Zotero accessing online resources. Is there anything unusual about your internet connection, e.g. are you going through a proxy server or the like?
  • In the evening I came back home and installed Zotero and I found its not the problem of the internet and I can install the style file you sent me.

    Thank you for your help.

Its the issue from my ofice laptop as I am not the system administrator. There is problems connecting to the servers that they have not authorized.

I will check with them tomorrow and update you.

Thank again for all the help :)
  • yes, that makes sense. I think the full list of what you'd need whitelisted is
    zoterofilestorage.s3.amazonaws.com (for file sync)
    sync.zotero.org
    api.zotero.org
    and www.zotero.org
    all with https
  • Finally, the IT guy helped to get a work around it. He saif he would not be able to whitelist but then we could download the style file, close zotero and paste directly into directory mentioned below.

    \Zotero\Zotero\Profiles\fde3ga9r.default\zotero\styles

    It works for me.

    Thanks again for your help.
