  • pubmed occasionally goes down. That's on their side & there's nothing we can do about it. Looks like it's working again.
  • In short; when you encounter a PubMed outage, report it to the NLM. Unless notified with multiple reports they may not recognize that there is a problem.

The last week of September through the second week of Novembereach year is a the NCBI/NLM uses to add or modify fields in the databases, change/add tags in the tagged output, and do similar things involving the xml schema and dtd. Outages are somewhat more frequent at this time but remain rare for any one of the several databases they maintain. The only part that stays unavailable for more than a few hours is new records. Each year there are gaps (last year it lasted several days) when anything new added to the PubMed db is not available. This gap lasts until they have become satisfied that the changes to indexing have not led to problems. Then several days of records appear at once. [I perform searches each day with bracketed eDate limits so that only records added to PubMed since the last search are returned.]

Sometimes the folks responsible for the database don't get it back online as they should and no one at the NLM notices right away. They are maintaining umpteen systems with fewer and fewer staff due to the 2013 sequester cutbacks.

I find that they are almost always quite responsive to reports of problems. The quickest way to report outages is to use the problem page:

    https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/home/about/contact.shtml

When the help desk receives multiple reports that part of the system is off line, they will forward the down-time report to the tech team.

One can get to that link by going to Contact on the footer of the home page.
  • It's actually a good idea for people to report any Zotero problems here first unless they know enough to individually verify that it's indeed eutils that's failing.

If our PubMed translator were to break at some point, we wouldn't want pubmed support flooded with Zotero error reports, nor do we want them to deal with people who have individual Zotero import issues.
