Upgrade StorageRetrieving references from a Zotero-formated Word (.docx) document?

While co-authoring a paper with a colleague and both using zotero, we exchange the word file of the document, that includes Zotero citations (with the codes).
Is it possible for me to retrieve in my library citations that my colleague inserted in the text? The "Edit bibliography" button in the Word toolbar / plugin shows a dialog with a green arrow from the bibliography to the library, but that only removes the reference, there doesn't seem to be a way to import Zotero's metatdata back into a library.
I know we could set up shared library, but that's additional work. And I am aware of the rtf scanning and third-party plugin options, but Zotero should be able to do a clean job from its own metadata?
