Lose fields on save and quit in OpenOffice

Mac version; problem does not happen in word. When I save and quit, then reopen the document, the references are no longer fields. So, addition of further citations, for example, using numbering, start from "1". Also, if after two sessions I generate the bib, only the references added that session are in the bib (because, they are the only ones that are fields). The previous citations are missing. Again, this does not happen in word. I can save and quit, etc., and the fields are still there.

    You're likely saving the file with the wrong file type. In Reference Marks mode, you need to save as .odt, not .doc.
