Strange appearance of Date field

I don't really understand the date field. For example, I am looking at one that says:

Date: SEP 2004 y m

Does the "y m" indicate the way in which the date is to be formatted on input? Or does it simply indicate the information that Zotero has extracted from whatever text is in that field?

The y/m/d is just an indicator of what Zotero has parsed from the date field. This lets you write something like "Summer 2004" or "circa 1789" and still have the field be sortable.

Eventually there'll probably be a way to quickly clean up data, and converting the date field to a standard format based on the parsed data will likely be an option.
