Step by step back up for Mac OS X 10.10.4

can anyone offer some step by step guidance to back up Zotero on a Mac running OS X 10.10.4 (Yosemite)? I want to back up my entirely library regularly as I begin work my dissertation this week and I've only seen procedures to do this on Windows.

    Don't have an external drive? Please buy one. My sanity has been saved 3 times by time machine backups over the years. An external drive is the best insurance money can buy and not really expensive.
