I am not sure I understand what the actual error is, but I get the error message "req.SendAsBinary is not a function" with Zotero 4.0.26.2 in Firefox running OpenSuSE 13.2. It might have something to do with the fact that I just upgraded Firefos to version 39.0

yes. You'll need to update Zotero to version 4.0.27, required for FF 39 compatibility.
