Save to Zotero not working

I'm having problems on almost all sites with saving references using the Standalone app. I've tried in Chrome and Firefox (all the latest versions). When I click the icon to save, both say that they are saving, but when I go into Zotero, the citation is nowhere to be found. Sometimes clicking the button multiple times works, but it's hit-or-miss. Sometimes I click it 5 times, and it stores citations twice (duplicate), and other times I click it 20 times and it never stores anything.

I'm having this problem everywhere... so it's not just one publisher. If there are any errors, I'm not seeing them. If there are some steps I can take to troubleshoot this, please let me know.
  • Do you see the title of the item being imported in the pop-up that comes up at the bottom right when import is _not_ working?

    And let's work with this:
    http://www.worldcat.org/title/wealth-of-nations-books-i-iii/oclc/8424650&referer=brief_results
to make sure we're looking at an item that would normally import.
  • Yes, I see the title when it says "Saving item" in the bottom right corner. (Interestingly, the title appears on the pages I'm working on, but not for your example--it just says "Saving item" and disappears.)

The one I'm using is: http://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1002/9781118332344.ch8/summary
  • Of course, after ~30 attempts, my example finally got saved into Zotero. We work on your example, though, and see if we can figure out what's causing the problem.
  • OK, I'd like to troubleshooot different aspects of this.
Let's first try in Firefox, and makes sure that Standalone is completely closed. You should see the items saving to Zotero in Firefox (open by clicking on the "Z" icon at the top right of Firefox).
Does that work? Only try once -- no need to try saving things multiple times.
  • Alright, yes, it is working in Firefox. I see you example in the list when clicking on the "Z" icon. However, it does not move it into Zotero Standalone.
  • OK, then see https://www.zotero.org/support/kb/sharing_data_directory
Once you have that set up correctly, there's a good chance it'll fix everything for you.
  • I made the suggested change. Zotero in Firefox now says "Could Not Save Item", and Zotero in Chrome is still hit-or-miss.
  • But when you add an item manually in Firefox, it does appear in Standalone next time you open it?

Could you provide the version numbers of all software involved (Chrome, Firefox, Zotero for Firefox, Zotero Chrome Extension, and Zotero Standalone)?
  • Yes, if I add it manually in Firefox, it shows up in Zotero Standalone the next time I open it.

    Version numbers are:
    Chrome: 43.0.2357.130 m (64-bit)
    Firefox: 38.0.5
    Zotero for Firefox: 4.0.26.4
    Zotero Chrome Extension: 4.0.26
    Zotero Standalone: 4.0.26.4
  • Could we get a debug ID from both the Chrome Connector and Standalone
for a single, failed attempt to save from either the Wiley or the Worldcat page?
    Instructions for Standalone: https://www.zotero.org/support/debug_output#zotero_for_firefox_or_zotero_standalone

    For the Chrome Connector: https://www.zotero.org/support/debug_output#zotero_connectors_chrome_and_safari
  • Chrome Debug ID: D921425587

    Firefox Debug ID: D291773598

However, for some reason Zotero in Firefox now works. (Chrome still failed.) I haven't restarted the computer or web browser since my last post either.
  • adamsmith:
(4)(+0000000): Translate: Parsing code for WorldCat Discovery Service

(3)(+0000005): Translate: Beginning translation with WorldCat Discovery Service

    (3)(+0000004): Translate: risURL= /share/citation.ris?oclcNumber=8424650&referer=brief_results&databaseIds=false

    (3)(+0000004): HTTP GET http://www.worldcat.org/share/citation.ris?oclcNumber=8424650&referer=brief_results&databaseIds=false
(Which results in a 404 from WorldCat.)
  • @makilahy -- could you update your translators ("Update Now" from the general tab of the Zotero preferences), restart Zotero and your browsers and try again?

At least the specific error the debug shows should be fixed, though that should have been limited to WorldCat.
  • Following your instructions, at first Google said it was saving the item but didn't. However, I tried Firefox and it worked fine. Deleting the entry, I came back to try again in Google and it worked this time. I've tried other research articles (for example, http://rstb.royalsocietypublishing.org/content/367/1597/1909.short) and both browsers seem to be working fine now.

I guess the problem is fixed. If I encounter more problems in the future, I'll be sure to come back and start a new thread.

Thanks for the speedy and helpful replies! I've been a big fan of Zotero since I discovered it, and after this experience, I'm definitely going to be suggesting the software to others.
