creating bibliography from web version and standalone question

hi there,

a few months back, after i updated to the most recent firefox, my standalone zotero disappeared from the firefox menu. i followed various directions on the forums to make it come back, and somehow ended up with my updated account on the zotero server, but the standalone zotero in my firefox only has some of my information.

i read a bit about synching, but am confused as to how to ensure that the server version is what updates the standalone, and not vice versa as that would remove years of research.

so i have just been using the server version, and today have spent hours trying to create a simple bibliography out of of one of my folders. usually in my standalone version, i just right click on the folder or selected items, and choose my style of biblio and go from there. but there are no options for me to export a bibliography into any sort of document that i can then transfer to word 2011 for mac.

ANY suggestions on the synching process and the creation of a bibliography would be much appreciated. i am a paying customer and hope to continue with zotero, and am nervous about keeping all of my library.

thank you so much!

  • You shouldn't just work with the web version and you can't create a bibliography with more than 25 items using the web version currently.
FWIW, you can just copy and paste the bibiliography created using the "cite" button in the web interface to Word, but again, this is very limited.

You can just sync Zotero and it will be fine -- sync only ever deletes items that you have explicitly deleted in Zotero. Sync is much smarter than just one version of your library replacing another version. It goes item-by-item. You won't lose your work.

For future reference some clarification on terminology:
    1. Zotero Website: The Library you see when you click on "My Library" at the top of this page.
    2. Zotero Standalone - the program you install that appears independently in your taskbar. You would typically use this together with an extension for your browser of choice.
    3. Zotero for Firefox - the Firefox add-on, functionally essentially the same as Zotero Standalone, but sits right in Firefox, won't appear in your taskbar.

(I'm mentioning this because you talk about "Zotero Standalone for Firefox" which doesn't exist; want to make sure we're talking about the same thing).
  • Thank you Adam Smith!

The synch, as you pointed out, worked great and did not erase my info. Thank you. And now, I can make the biblio from the standalone.

Thank you for the clarification -- so to clarify whether I have 2 or 3 above: if I downloaded zotero into firefox and it sits as a z in the taskbar, it is Zotero Standalone which I use with my browser of choice, in this case I chose Firefox?

    Thank you!
  • How do you open the Zotero you have installed?
