Abstract Field

This may be a basic question, but how do you display an abstract field in the standalone version?
  • I'm not quite clear what the question is - the abstract field is right there in the right-hand tab. Are you not seeing it, or do you mean in a citation, or something else entirely?
  • Yea, not seeing it at all. My fields are:

    filename
    pages
    modified
    indexed
    related
    tags
    then the note section

I don't see any tabs per se, only three columns.
  • right, that's just an file/attachment, not a Zotero item. Import any article via URL bar icon to see how this should look,e.g.
    http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2479046/

    You can try
    https://www.zotero.org/support/retrieve_pdf_metadata
to automatically get metadata for that file (provided it's a PDF).
  • OK (forehead slap) I was looking at the pdf instead of the metadata file that contained the pdf. Is the abstract field automatically populated when metadata is extracted or will I have to copy/paste from pdf? Most of mine do not contain data in the abstract field.
  • depends on the source. We try to grab abstracts wherever we can when you use the URL bar icon (which should be your principal method of importing under normal circumstances). You won't get an abstract when using the retrieve metadata feature, though.
