Sudden loss of pdftotext capabilities

Last Friday, I installed the pdf indexing (xpdf) through Zotero (3.02) and was able to attach pdf documents and have a text version automatically transcribed and saved as a note. Since I have a lot of archived newspapers in pdf format, I was thrilled--primarily because of the full-text searching capabilities.

However, today, using the same computer, the same set of files, and the same security settings for the pdf documents (printing, content copying [and cc for accessibility], page extraction, and filling of form fields ALLOWED), it would attach the pdf documents and index them, but it refused to generate a text version as a note, and when I tried inputting terms from the text of the pdf, it could not find it in the library search.

I'm relatively new to Zotero (roughly 1 month) so I'm not even sure what I did right the first time or what's wrong now. I'm currently in an important phase in my dissertation, I really need to get this worked out and get the functionality back that I had before.

Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

***UPDATE: I forgot I had put my own full-text into a small set of articles (ironically the ones I added pdf's for last week), and as such, the "notes" that were generated were my own.

The frustration over NY Times articles and the lack of searchable text remains, though. I'm accessing these through ProQuest. Does anyone know of any other text-based (rather than image-based) databases where I can find NYT articles from the 1950s/1960s?
