zotero not working properly

I've installed zotero but I don't get the Zotero logo that is supposed to appear in the status bar at the bottom right of my browser. I don't know why this is happening. I've been using Zotero with windows and I've been doing fine but I just moved to mac and now it's not working. I don't know if it's something related to mac os (like, is there a special zotero for mac?)

    Zotero should work fine on Firefox 2 on the Mac & doesn't need a special version. If you confirm that Zotero is installed and follow:
    http://www.zotero.org/documentation/reporting_bugs
    It may be easier to track down what is wrong.

    You should also be able to open the Zotero pane by selecting the Tools drop down from the Firefox bar and selecting Zotero.

    One more problem: I realized that most of the times I don't get the little icon in the address bar, especially on websites (ie, in the New York Times website). I'm managing with clicking on the "create new item" icon on the zotero pane (which I open from the tools drop down menu, because I still don't get to see the Z on the bottom right of my browser). I checked the "report bugs" section as you advised me, but I don't know what can be wrong, I don't get any error message or anything. also, I tried unstalling and re-installing the software and it's still the same problem, so I don't know how to explain the "reproduce the problem" part. I know this is a little confusing, sorry! but I'd really like to get zotero working properly!
