German Archives - No Capitalization?

I've been trying to figure out how to use Zotero to not only host my bibliographic citations, but also allow me to add new archival sources. I have run into a few issues, some related to formatting of the citation and others to the forced capitalization of the TITLE field. The only category that seems to work is the Manuscript category (this is in the Chicago Manual of Style - full notes style sheet).

I've been able to work out most of the formatting issues by entering my archival information differently than the fields necessary call for - like adding the signature behind the archive name so that it displays correctly: (BArch DY/24024, 17-173). This is not ideal. I would prefer to use the Archive, Loc. in Archive, and # of pages (or if there were a page #s field). However, it doesn't look like I can rearrange how these are displayed when I place them into word, so I guess I will simply have to use this workaround instead.

The other issue, which is making Zotero actually not work at all for citing archival sources is that titles in German are *not* capitalized as they are in English. I cite in bother English and German, so moving to a German formatted Chicago style sheet would introduce other issues with the English sources. Is there a way to turn off the automatic capitalization in the TITLE field? Is there a way to add a description field that would precede the title? Something like: Protocol of a meeting between x and y "Aussprache über den Ausbau des Feriendienstes"?

Ideally, I would like to have the full citation look something like this:

Protocol of a meeting of the FDGB Vorstand, "Aussprache über den Ausbau des Feriendienstes," November 18, 1948, BArch DY 34/24024, 170-173.

    for the main question.

No way to add a description or so as part of a citation, though you can obviously add it as a prefix when inserting the citation.
  • Thanks, that fixed the title issue perfectly! I hadn't noticed that that field was for.

I also think I found a work around for keeping the descriptor in the note - I put it into the "TYPE" field and it inserts it now after the title in parentheses with the date, which also works just fine for my needs (unless my copy-editor complains...).

    Thanks for the help!
  • I am having the same issue, I am using a lot of archival resources and I want the name of Archive and the Loc. in Archive to show in the reference list that I need to generate and include at the end of my dissertation. Is there any way of doing that? I have to use APA.
  • can't be done without editing the style. APA has very little to say about archival work--can you really not use a style like Chicago that's been developed with the needs of historical research in mind?
