Saving files?

When I use the "save a copy of the file"-option, the file seems to be stored on the local computer only, which is quite a puzzle to me since I upgraded storage in order to be able to access my PDFs (mainly) everywhere. Am I doing something wrong?

(MAC, Zotero for Firefox-user)

    all items stored in Zotero are stored locally. You can then sync them to the server:
    https://www.zotero.org/support/sync
    Are you saying that's not working?

    Yes, despite syncing, I cannot access my PDFs. I am told they are located outside of Zotero.
