References disappeared from library, but still in document

Hi there,

I have been using Zotero for many years without any problems. However, today, when I went to edit two references in my Zotero firefox library, both were missing. This is particularly strange because both references still exist in my documents. In the document, they can be inserted, edited, and remain there if I refresh the bibliography. However, when I go to the both the firefox or online library they are not there.. therefore I am unable to edit the titles etc.

Can you offer any guidance? N.B. I have never changed the location of my library/folders or anything like that.

Many thanks
  • In the Word document, press alt+F9. That will show the complete field codes of the two items. find the uri of both and post it here.
    It will look something like
    "uri":["http://zotero.org/users/2433/items/EBECGQJ3"]

    Then insert an item that still is in the library into the document and do the same.
  • Thanks for this.

    For several items that are missing:
    "uri":["http://zotero.org/users/377709/items/U45NEPDX"]
    "uri":["http://zotero.org/users/377709/items/27HAXUGK"]
    "uri":["http://zotero.org/users/377709/items/SPGSS994"]

    For an item that is there:
    "uri":["http://zotero.org/users/377709/items/9D37V89Z"]
  • @rizzler - are you using a single computer or are you syncing between multiple machines.

    @Dan -- can you see any of these on the server?
  • Hi Adam,

    I am using a single computer. HOWEVER, now that you ask this question, I've realised that I did turn my old laptop on last week to retrieve something from it. Perhaps Zotero synced somehow. I've just checked the old laptop and the "missing" references are still in the library on there.

    What's the best way to move forward? Some kind of sync? Or move the info over and delete Zotero from the old laptop?

    Thanks so much for your help.
  • I'd start by
    backing up your zotero data directory on both computers (especially the old laptop):
    https://www.zotero.org/support/zotero_data#backing_up_your_zotero_library

    (this is likely not necessary, but let's be safe). Then sync the old laptop. After syncing, make sure the items are online on zotero.org. Then sync your new computer. That should fix this. If it doesn't, we can investigate further (and in that case the backups may come in handy, so don't skip that step).
  • That worked a treat, thanks so much, hugely appreciated, best.
