Journal Titles not italicizing in Word-workaround not working

When I insert my bibliography, journal title (and other italics) are not italicizing. I've attempted to use a dummy citation at the beginning as the workaround suggested, but it is still not working. Any other suggestions?

how about in a new document, with just one citation (lets make it a journal article)?
If that works, what is the first bib entry in the broken document? Both with and without the dummy?

I tried a new document with one journal reference and the same thing happened—no italics. I tried this with multiple different articles with no success.

Oddly, if I "undo" multiple times after inserting the bibliography, it add italics correctly but removes the spacing.

I don't think we've ever seen this. Which Word version? How about if you try a different citation style, let's say Chicago author-date?

I am using Word 2011 version 14.4.4.

I tried using a different citation style. Still no italics
