Edit References Column/Window Missing 4.0.26.1

I just installed the new standalone Zotero v 4.0.26.1 and the column on the far right where I can edit my references is nowhere to be seen.

I have some sync errors that are showing up (I have an "!" showing up in the Upper Right) but other than that, Zotero seems to be working as usual, except that the edit row/window is not visible. Expanding the window does not solve the problem.

This is a 10.10.2 Yosemite Mac.

This version of Zotero seemed to install itself. I saw something that said 4.0.26.1 existed and the next thing I know it had been installed. That seemed a little odd to me.

I reinstalled it again on purpose but no change in behavior.

  • like Firefox and all Firefox add-ons, Zotero auto-updates. If you really want to, you can disable that, but it's a bad idea (it's a hidden pref, there's a thread somewhere on the forum on it).

Your right-panel is simply collapsed, click on the right side of the frame and/or click and drag to uncollapse it.
  • Ok, that fixed it. That is not at all obvious! I kept looking in the menus and up on the column headers but I didn't think to click on that narrow divider. Thanks.
  • Collapsing the right-hand pane is a new feature, added by popular demand, and as far as we know it has to be done manually by the user, but it does seem to be causing a lot of confusion, so we'll be trying to find a way to make it clearer in an upcoming version.
  • I wonder why this happens _so_ much more than with the left panel? We get maybe one question on the left-hand one every year, but one every day since the right-hand pane can collapse. Why the difference?
  • Yeah, not sure. Best theories I've come up with:

    1) The right-hand pane collapses when it's still pretty wide, whereas the collections pane has to be dragged past where you would reasonably want it.

    2) People are collapsing the left pane and simply not realizing that there's a problem, since they can still use Zotero (in whatever collection they happen to end up in).

    3) The right pane is somehow getting collapsed on upgrade if window settings are set a particular way. This is what everyone is saying is happening, but I can't reproduce it, and am inclined to believe that people are just doing it accidentally.
  • Maybe people just use the scroll-bar for the center panel a lot more, and/or resize the right-hand splitter a lot more, and hence are more likely to mis-click on the grippy?
