How to insert citation and bibliography of one paper into word at the same time.

I am running a mac with office 2008. The problem I met is each time I cite a paper, I have to insert the citation in my paragraph first, and then roll down to the end to insert the bibliography of the paper I cited. Is there any way that I can insert a citation with bibliography showing at the end at the same time?
  • You just have to insert the bibliography once, it then auto-updates (that is when you're using the Word add-on, of course: https://www.zotero.org/support/word_processor_plugin_usage )
  • Are you using the Word plugin (https://www.zotero.org/support/word_processor_plugin_installation) or copying the references in manually?

If you are using the plugin to insert the references, then go to the place where you want the bibliography and click the "Insert Bibliography" button. This will add a bibliography that updates automatically as you add new references.
  • Sorry, maybe I didn't clarify it clearly. Take an example:

The growth of archaeopteryx (Wae-Hayee, Tekasakul, Eiamsa-ard, & Nuntadusit, 2015)............

    ......

    Wae-Hayee, M., Tekasakul, P., Eiamsa-ard, S., & Nuntadusit, C. (2015). Flow and Heat Transfer Characteristics of in-Line Impinging Jets With Cross-Flow At Short Jet-To-Plate Distance. Experimental Heat Transfer, 28(6), 511–530. doi:10.1080/08916152.2014.913091

So I have to first insert the citation in paragraph, which is (Wae-Hayee,Tekasakul,Eiamsa-ard, & Nuntadusit, 2015). Then I have to move down to insert bibliography. I am asking if there is any method that the bibliography can show automatically at the end of the document when I insert the citation in my writing
  • You only need to click the Insert Bibliography button once. It will automatically update as you add new citations. Zotero doesn't know where you want the bibliography to be placed without clicking the button. I usually wait to insert the bibliography until I am done with the entire paper.

we understand, but what you're describing is not the case if you're using the Word add-on.

The bibliography does update automatically as you cite in the document. You only have to insert it one single time (and can do so at any point in your writing process).

edit: win some, lose some ;)
  • But if I insert bibliography in place where I need the citation, when cursor is in the paragraph, it generate the detailed bibliography(Wae-Hayee, M., Tekasakul, P., Eiamsa-ard, S., & Nuntadusit, C. (2015). Flow and Heat Transfer Characteristics of in-Line Impinging Jets With Cross-Flow At Short Jet-To-Plate Distance. ...) in the sentence, but not (Wae-Hayee, Tekasakul, Eiamsa-ard, & Nuntadusit, 2015)
  • Hmm, we're talking past each other.
So again. Yes, you will have to insert the bibliography at a different point as the citation. Yes, the first time you insert the bibliography that is a separate action from inserting a citation.
But, and that's what we're trying to explain here, you only have to insert the bibliography one single time for any document you're writing. Any further item you cite will automatically appear in the bibliography. You also don't have to do this at the same time as you're inserting the citation.
At some point you'll have to insert a header for the bibliography anyway, right? That's (for example) when you can also click "Insert Bibliography".
  • Got it, thanks!

Long ago I made this mistake. So, for others who may read this thread, I may save you a moment of frustration. Within the document, you will need to place the cursor where you want the bib to appear and click. After this first time, as adamsmith said, the bibliography is handled automatically. You should not click the "insert bibliography" button until you have moved and clicked the cursor away from where you were typing the body of your manuscript.
