Why there is no DOI field for journal articles?

Journal articles usually have their own DOI (for example: http://www.plosone.org/article/Authors/info:doi/10.1371/journal.pone.0059110), but there is no such field for "Journal article" item. Because of this journal articles, when added by DOI in Zotero, become articles from periodic series. For my mind, it is not right.
  • Not sure what you mean here. Journal Article items in Zotero have always had a DOI field...

Well, here is what I mean. This is an article from periodic series, it has field DOI ("ЦИО" in my russian version): https://fotki.yandex.ru/next/users/a-morkovin/album/975/view/569052

And it is an article from journal withot such field: https://fotki.yandex.ru/next/users/a-morkovin/album/975/view/569051

    Maybe I miss something important...
  • The second item is imported as a Magazine article, not a Journal article (see the item type at the top of each item is different). Switch the item type to Journal Article and you will have DOI.
  • (in the medium run, we'll get a DOI field for all item types.
  • Thank you for answer, bwiernik. So there is an ambiguity in Russian version because in Russian language the same term used both for journals and magazines.

But still I don't understand what is the function of fields "Series", "Series name", "Series text". This fields remain blank when I import an article from a scientific journal. They are needed for book series like "BTO Guide", not for journals.
  • Some journals also have series information. See discussion at https://forums.zotero.org/discussion/35399/correct-fields-for-entering-a-journal-series/ for example
  • Thanks, noksagt!
