PDF's not downloading into Zotero file

Hello,

I have installed zotero using chrome and the necessary plug-ins. I decided to save an article from the database to zotero. I clicked the paper icon in the browser, the box in the bottom right came up showing it was saving the info including the PDF, when it changed to a red x in the box next to the pdf.
when i went to zotero to look in the folder, there is no arrow alluding to a pdf that i can read from zotero. (I was able to open the pdf straight from the data base with no problem)
I use a PC, can anyone please help me download/access my pdf files in zotero

thank you :)
  • what's the URL exactly as you see it for the database entry?
  • is the what your asking for?

    http://web.b.ebscohost.com.seu.idm.oclc.org/ehost/detail/detail?vid=10&sid=4cc9fbcc-ea0a-4cda-ab3e-16aa4a1e7613%40sessionmgr198&hid=101&bdata=JnNpdGU9ZWhvc3QtbGl2ZSZzY29wZT1zaXRl#db=rzh&AN=2011738310
  • yes. Unfortunately you won't get PDFs attached from some sites (most notably EBSCO, ProQuest, and Sciencedirect) when using Zotero Standalone and an institutional proxy (the .seu.idm.oclc.org part).

Only solution is to either use the Firefox add-on or authenticate without a proxy (e.g. via VPN or directly on campus). If those aren't options, you'll have to download and attach the PDF manually.
  • so it is possible I may be able to down load the PDF's only if i am on campus?
why is that? (i take online/off campus courses)

The person that introduced me to Zotero, downloads PDF's from EBSCO with now problem. I have sent her an email asking her what browser she has.

If you think using the Firefox add-on will help, how do i do that? Does this mean I would need to conduct my searches using firefox and not chrome?

    why is that?
The reasons are rather technical (Chrome doesn't allow the Zotero connector to pass on cookies across domains, if you care for the details) but basically yes.

    correct.
  • Thank you adamsmith, I downloaded foxfire and can now download my PDF's. Now I have another lil problem.

    A) while in firefox, I open Zotero, when I click on my resource to open my PDF. The PDF opens on a new tab in firefox instead of in Zotero. I would like for it to open in Zotero so I can highlight and make notes on the docuement.

    B) Can I change the view of Zotero when I open it in firefox? Right now it covers half that firefox page.

    C) When I attempt to pull a citation from Zotero in my word document, I access the icons on the add on tab. Since downloading firefox I am not able to use this function. Is this because that add on is part of Zotero Standalone? Please advise if you know how to fix it so I can use Zotero on my word document.

    Thank you so much :)
  • A) Not sure what you mean. Zotero doesn't have a PDF viewer. If you want to open it in an external viewer, you can use right-click--> Open in External Viewer.
    B) Sure, you can drag it up or down so that it uses less or more of the screen (settings that Zotero remembers). You can also set it to always run in its own tab on full screen in the general tab of the prefences.
    C) You need ton install the Word add-on in Firefox:
    https://www.zotero.org/support/word_processor_plugin_installation#microsoft_word
  • The add-on worked great thank you. I have been moving the view up and down, wasn't sure if there was other options. I will check on the external viewer. I was watching an orientation on Zotero where their viewer allowed them to highlight, edit, etc.

adamsmith, thank you again SO much. You have been very helpful. :)
