JAVA ISSUES: Apache Office 4.1.1 Firefox 35.0 Mac OSX 10.10.1 Yosemite
Problem:
On Apache Openoffice (AOo) the ZOTERO WORD PROCESSOR PLUGIN no longer works. AOo would also crash and quit. Opening PREFERENCES>OPENOFFICE>JAVA leads to a window with the following:
~ to view this content you need to install java runtime environment...
The window offers two options: MORE INFO, OK
Solution:
1. Remove JAVA: delete the Java Plugin file JavaAppletPlugin.plugin
1.1 Use the SEARCH box in FINDER, type JavaAppletPlugin.plugin and drag the file to the TRASH
1.2 I also deleted the JAVA folder in
/Library/Java (to find the LIBRARY folder, on FINDER>GO -hold the OPTION key)
1.3 I also removed the JAVA icon from SYSTEM PREFERENCES using this line in TERMINAL
sudo rm -rf /Library/PreferencePanes/JavaControlPanel.prefPane
2. Remove AOo. Find the Aoo icon in APPLICATIONS and move to the TRASH
3. Uninstall ZOTERO from FIREFOX.
TOOLS>ADD-ONS
Select all ZOTERO items and REMOVE
4. Restart computer
5. Run REPAIR DISK PERMISSIONS in DISK UTILITY
6. Reinstall Open Office: https://www.openoffice.org/
7. Install the appropriate JAVA SE Runtime Environment: http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/java/javase/downloads/jre7-downloads-1880261.html
I got "Java SE Runtime Environment 7u71" (JAN 15, 2015)
8. You may skip this step: Verify JAVA: https://www.java.com/en/download/installed.jsp
Follow the troubleshooting directions to make sure JAVA and your browser work together (I tested this using SAFARI)
9. Install the JAVA RUNTIME ENVIRONMENT compatible with MAC, AOo and ZOTERO: http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1572
10. Restart computer
11. Run REPAIR DISK PERMISSIONS in DISK UTILITY
12. Open AOo, go to PREFERENCES>OPENOFFICE>JAVA
13. Select ORACLE CORPORATION 1.7.0_71
14. Quit AOo
15. Restart computer
16. Run REPAIR DISK PERMISSIONS in DISK UTILITY
17. Recover your ZOTERO citing formats: https://www.zotero.org/styles
This seemed to work and my ADOBE applications seem to work fine.
It seems that allowing JAVA to automatically update leads to conflict with the installed ZOTERO WORD PROCESSOR PLUGIN so you have to make JAVA, YOSEMITE, AOo and the ZOTERO plugin all get along. Furthermore, JAVA offers at least 3 versions to choose from (JRE 6 for MAC, and JAVAs 7 and 8).
Hopefully this will save you some time but it should be great to have this conflicts with JAVA somehow worked out. It is the second time this happens and figuring this out was a little bit more complicated than the first time.
