Is it possible to rename papers inside folders? Zotfile / Zotero mac

how does the icon for the file in Zotero look after the ZotFile rename? Does it have a little link icon above it or does it still show the PDF icon?

edit: and if you open the file from Zotero, which of the two versions does it open?
  • the file relocated to dropbox appears with a link chain, the one still on zotero data folder has the adobe pdf symbol. It depends on the reference I click. Some will go to the new file on dropbox, others will open the one on the data file
  • so the item has two attachments in Zotero after the re-name? One link, one attachment?
  • yes. and two entries (even 5 in some cases, idk why)
  • Can you try to replicate this with a single file at a time?
Maybe take a couple of screenshots on the way and post them somewhere for me to look at?
I'm trying to understand what's even happening, I've never seen anything that sounds even vaguely like this so I'm trying to understand if ZotFile is doing something very odd that would have to be reported as a bug or if you're doing something very specific that confuses it.
  • hm. this is odd. So i did it with a single file and it seems to have worked. I have no clue why/how i have things duplicated/triplicated. could it be due to repetition of the process?

yeah, doing this multiple times would cause entries to multiply.
edit: where "this" is the dragging them to Zotero. After that it's rather hard to duplicate them.
  • this: http://libguides.princeton.edu/c.php?g=84091&p=543200 suggests using links to files, which is basically option A you suggested. Would that work better?
  • Well, ZotFile creates links to files and it does to automatically and more importantly will keep doing so in the future. I don't think it mixes well with a manually created folder structure (i.e. you can't tell it to move linked attachments into folders that already exist), though, which is why I recommended using it from the start.
  • Okay. But just explain to me what does this link created by zotfile works. Because it is moving things out of the data folder to put on dropbox, right? Or the root file will still be on the data folder?
  • Yes, ZotFile takes the file out of the zotero storage folder, moves (not copies) it to the location you specify, and links to it.
  • ok then. I will carefully check folders before importing them.
Is there any plugin to help automate metadata fetching for files that zotero is not able to recognize?
  • no, there isn't, sorry. In many cases probably easier to import the reference (e.g. from google scholar) and attach the PDF than to enter everything manually.
  • alright. I'll try that. Thank you so much for your time and attention, Adam. :)
  • Ok. It was working then somehow it's messed up.
I was doing what you suggested - importing my pdfs to zotero, then getting metadata, then asking it to rename and thus move the file from its folder to dropbox. Now, everytime I ask to rename it's returning an error and the file goes missing - it is deleted from the data folder and zotfile doesnt transfer. ideas?
  • what does the error say?
  • it says unknown error for zotfile.
also: attachments skipped because they are top-level ....
  • Best I can tell that'd look like a ZotFile bug.
Try to replicate this with a minimum number of items at once, also restart Zotero for good measure, then post that with link to a screenshot to the ZotFile thread.
Joscha isn't always super quick to reply--he has a job and does ZotFile in his spare time--so you may have to be a bit patient.
  • yes. it seems like a bug. I tried with one item at a time and had the same error.
I'll try contacting him in the zotfile thread. Thank you
