Failure to add RIS and BibTex files - error 1872551946

Hello,

I was attempting to add several RIS and BibTex files to Zotero but was unsuccessful. Afterwards I attempted to sync Zotero and go the error message below (see error message #1872551946). I'd like some help troubleshooting this error and restoring my Zotero syncs to normal.

Anyone encountered this before?

Will

  • You're running Firefox alpha. Especially at this time, almost every Firefox version requires a Zotero update, which is often only released on the eve of the final release of the Firefox version. If you need Zotero to run reliably, you'll have to run Firefox on the regular release cycle.
  • Thanks, I should have considered that. I've reverted to the standard Firefox which seemed to fix the problem.

I don't want to bang my head against the wall but I always like to get some idea of what causes errors in the tools I use most. Is it possible to discern the source of the problem from that error or would it require further investigation?
  • Dan usually knows what is breaking things in upcoming Firefox releases, so he may drop by and say (from what I understand, most of the issues since 30+ have been how different components of Zotero are allowed to communicate - I'm guessing with those two translators it may be related to global variables) but there are so many errors in there that the relevant part actually got cut off--nothing in there has to do with import.
  • The NS_ERROR_XPC_NOT_ENOUGH_ARGS error is already fixed in the 4.0 Beta — Mozilla changed a function definition — but other things are still broken due to the Mozilla changes adamsmith described. Mozilla has been making those changes (mostly without documentation) in just about every recent release. As adamsmith says, we always put out a compatible version by the time the Firefox version is released.
  • Dan Stillman, adamsmith: thank you for the explanation of the error and for providing me a sense of how changes get introduced into Mozilla and the effects it has on your work.

In the end, for someone like me, the difference really is just that I need to stick with regular FF releases since the only reason I used the developer version was for the tools (eg inspector), most of which seem to be available in the regular releases. But it's still helpful to understand how these changes get introduced.

    Thanks again.

    Will
