Catalog personal books
I use zotero to organize my personal library. Anyone else do this? I know it is not zotero's intended use but it works well enough. Z is free and I already use it to organise my journal papers. Here's what I do:
Setup a collection for "Our Books"
Setup subcollections for each book case (or even each bookshelf), storage box etc
Set extensions.zotero.recursiveCollections to true see topic:
http://forums.zotero.org/discussion/3317/
Set amazon and worldcat as Firefox search engines
For each book type the ISBN into the search box. If amazon doesn't have it then worldcat usually does. If that fails I search on Google. For very old books without an ISBN I use the Library of Congress call numbers.
Add book to appropriate collection. Sometimes I also get around to adding the picture as well using drag and drop.
I suppose it would be easier to use a barcode scanner and somehow automate the process but not every book has a barcode. It would also be nice to have some way of tracking the books later as they move about from shelf to shelf but at that level a real library program would be better.
Anyone have any suggestions on using Z for a physical library?
