Standalone Startup Error

I am having a problem with my zotero standalone. When I open it up, it says "The Zotero Database cannot be opened. Make sure you have read write permissions for all files in the Zotero data directory."

I have tried reinstalling but I get the same error.
I can open it as Adminstrator, but if I import a PDF I cannot open it up. It says that the file has and error or something.
Once I change the Zotero Data Directory path, I cannot open up Zotero anymore, not even as the admin.

Could really use some help.

I have gone through that process a few times and nothing is working. As far as I can tell I have full permission to everything.

Could not read chrome manifest 'file:///C:/Program%20Files%20(x86)/Zotero%20Standalone/xulrunner/chrome.manifest'.
  • That message pretty much means what it says. Your user account needs to have read and write privileges to the entire Zotero data directory and all files and folders below it (as it would by default). You can fix that from the bottom of the Get Info window for the data directory (i.e., the 'zotero' folder one level above where it drops you when you do Show Data Directory).
  • I have read write access to that folder and everything in it. I went to the file that I think was causing problems and I opened it up manually and closed it. But then I got "Zotero encountered and error." Once I got this error I decided to reinstall it again.

After reinstalling I got the same error, but was ale to open it as the admin. Not sure why I could open as the admin, since I wasn't able to open it as the admin just before I uninstalled zotero.

Here is the error ID I have from the error report: 1341027952

Is there anything in there that would help with the problem I am having?
  • I went to the file that I think was causing problems
This issue is the Zotero database file, zotero.sqlite. Since you can't "open" an SQLite file, I'm pretty sure you're not looking in the right place. Note that this doesn't have anything to do with PDFs, etc., so ignore all of those for now.

(Also, not sure why I thought this was OS X. Disregard the "Get Info" part, though you can change permissions on Windows too. If you can write to something as an admin and can't as a normal user, it's almost certainly a permissions problem.)
  • I understand that admin thing. However, I can only open zotero once as an admin and then after I close it it will give me the same error while I try and open it as an admin. THat doesn't make sense to me.

The other issue is, I have been running zotero from my laptop and my desktop from the same zotero database directory. My desktop one is working fine. However my laptop says it has read write permission problems even though I have full the folder set to full control for my profile.

The frustrating thing about this is I can't even figure out how to completely start over with zotero on my laptop. I have unintstalled and reinstalled, but it's as if it picks up right where I left off. I get the same errors and have the same problem trying to get my library going again.

When you say same data directory, how do you have that set up? Having two versions of Zotero on different computers point to the same data directory could cause all types of problems, this potentially included.
  • Well I had it set up as the same one and was working for months.

I'd be happy to not have the same database, but the problem I have is I can't even figure how to uninstall zotero and start from scratch. I uninstall the program, but then when I reinstall it, it seems to pick up right from where I uninstalled. It gives me the same errors upon opening and I can't figure out how to just get zotero to work properly again, with or without my library.

Any help on just starting over would be great. Because when I reinstall, it defaults back to the "custom" database I had set up and the only way I can open it is as the admin. But then once I close it, I only get errors and can't every get it open again.
  • I have reinstalled Zotero and copied everything from the Data Directory that my desktop is using to a different location and made that the data directory for my laptop.

However, I am receiving an error when I try and open Zotero. It says "An error occurred when starting Zotero." And so it won't open. I can open it as an Administrator. However, if I try and open a pdf file it gives me an error and says "The app does not support the contract specified or is not installed." So even though I can open Zotero as an admin, things are not working properly. I though perhaps the problem had to do with the .zotero-ft-cache. So I deleted all of those and that didn't work.

Here are the errors/warnings/messages I receive when trying to open zotero on my laptop. Any help/suggestions for fixing this would be greatly appreciated!!!

  • NEED HELP.

I ran the Debugger on my startup because I am at a major loss for what to do about Zotero on my laptop.

    1. I did a reset from the server hoping that would fix everything.
---but I still get "We've encountered and error starting up Zotero." So I still have to open it as an administrator.
    2. I opened it as an admin and ran the debugger on start up.

    HERE IS THE DEBUGGER ID:

    The Debug ID is D585057927
  • What's the problem that debug output is supposed to show? I see no errors and no indication of any problem.

Beyond that, don't open Zotero as an administrator. Run it with your normal user account, and if you're getting an error with that, fix the permissions in the Zotero data directory, temporarily disable security software, or otherwise figure out what on your system is interfering with Zotero's normal operation.
  • The app does not support the contract specified or is not installed.
And this is not a Zotero message. It sounds like there are a whole bunch of unrelated issues on your system, and you'll have to resolve those on your own before we can help you.
