APA variation for new DOI llink format

In the 2012 (6th ed.) APA Style Guide to Electronic References, the section on electronic media explains the new DOI format and recommends using it in APA citations.

Can another variation of APA 6 style be created that includes the updated DOI format (http://dx.doi.org/...)?

Thanks so much!
  • sorry, I'm not sure I understand. Are you requesting creating dx.doi.org resolved links via the DOI? I don't think that's something APA says to do. The current APA style does include DOIs.
  • FWIW, doi.org says they prefer http://doi.org/ (without the dx)
  • I am suggesting creating dx.doi.org resolved links via the DOI. The 6th edition of the manual did not include this, but in 2012 APA published an updated Guide to Electronic References (http://www.worldcat.org/oclc/795354092) that does suggest using the updated format. That is why I thought it would be a good idea to create an APA variation with the updated format rather than change the main APA 6th style. Does that make more sense?
  • ah OK. APA blogpost on this is here:
    http://blog.apastyle.org/apastyle/2014/07/how-to-use-the-new-doi-format-in-apa-style.html
I'm not sure what we'll do. I'm not crazy about yet another version of APA.
  • (aurimas, I'm pretty sure APA doesn't like that link)

The blog post suggests that either option is fine for APA 6th edition: "Because this change is recent and many publishers are still implementing the new CrossRef guidelines, either the old or the new DOI format is acceptable."

Since a resolvable DOI is more useful, and only slightly more verbose, I suggest just switching over to the new format (using "http://doi.org/") for apa.csl. We can then decide whether a variant with the old version is needed based on the number of complaints we get.

I'm sure as well, doesn't make it not publicly available though. oh CSU...
  • In my recent experience, my colleagues and I have been asked by several APA journals to switch to the new DOI format, so I agree with Rintze that apa.csl (and its variants), should just be switched over to the new format.
  • Thanks bwiernik, that's very useful. We'll go that route, then, should be able to do that soon.
