ATLAS codes journals as Magazines

Edit: Corrected the original thread link.

Regarding he EBSCOhost translator (ATLAS database)...

Lately (when it was working) the Item Type is coded "Magazine Article" instead of "Journal Article."

I doubt that makes any difference for citations (does it?), but it's a bit annoying, and makes searching/sorting by Item Type awkward.

Thanks!
  • Just to be clear - you see the article icon in the URL bar, but it imports as a magazine? Is that right?

Note to self - permalink for me is:
    http://search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&db=rfh&AN=ATLA0000660956&site=ehost-live

I'm having the same problems with the beta that you have right now. I'll take a closer look as soon as that is fixed, which will be by Monday the latest.

    That is correct.

    Thanks!

P.S. I'm having a problem posting this reply. It says "There was a problem authenticating your post information." I'm adding this in case my orginal message was too short.
  • I'm having a problem posting this reply. It says "There was a problem authenticating your post information."
I've been fighting with that the last couple of days, thought that was just me, but I'll report this as a potentially wider issue then.
  • adamsmith, I followed your permalink and got a journalArticle for both the URL bar icon and as the import. Can you reproduce this?
  • As per above I'm on the beta right now, so this doesn't work at all for me and I'm working something else right now, so don't want to switch around versions.
  • ok. I can't reproduce this with beta or otherwise, but we're testing with "ATLA Religion Database with ATLASerials" rather than "ATLASerials, Religion Collection" so there might be differences.

arggem, can you export RIS for one of those items and post the contents?

  • Update:

First of all: I'm off the beta. It got too buggy at the wrong time.
    Now I'm on Z 4.0.24.

Now, when I click on the individual journal icon in the URL bar, the item imports correctly, as a Journal.

However, if I import the same item (or multiple items) from the folder icon/list, it still gets coded as a magazine.

Yes, same item gets coded two different ways, depending on the context (individual vs. multiple).

    Seems weird to me.

    Thanks for checking on this.
  • when you hover over the folder icon for multi-import, does it still say EBSCO?
  • Yes. It says Save to Zotero (EBSCOhost) in both instances.

Just a note to say that the problem noted in Item #9 is still not fixed.

Imports from folder icon still coded as _magazine_.
Imports from individual icon codes correctly as _journal_.

Hovering over both icons say _Save to Zotero (EBSCOhost)_.

    Thanks for checking on this.

  • I'd say the error is on EBSCOhost side. They report that item as a "Periodical" in the search results and Zotero uses that information to correct the (frequently-inaccurate) metadata export.
  • Thanks aurimas!

Before I write them, I need some clarification to make sure I understand the situation.

Below are 2 RIS exports; one when the item was imported into Zotero using the search results folder icon, the second when the same item was imported into Z using the individual article icon.

The only difference I see is that TY is MGZN in the first instance and JOUR in the second.

Are you saying that there is something different in the way they code the item in the search results view (i.e. Periodical) and that Z changes the TY thinking it should be a magazine? If so, where does it indicate that it is a periodical, and what should it say in order to maintain TY as JOUR?

Or, does EBSCOhost have two different metadata forms (one if it appears in the search results folder icon view, and a different one in the individual article view)?

In other words, is Z actually correcting (changing) something? If so, based on what? And…should it be changing it?

Or, does EBSCOhost have two different metadata forms and Z isn’t changing anything?

Or have I misunderstood this whole issue?

Any insight you can give me would be greatly appreciated!

    Thanks for your help!

(I hope my explanation of what I want clarified hasn't been terrible confusing! If so, just let me know. I'm sure I can obfuscate it even more! :))
  • I was referring to the icon that is displayed next to the search result. The RIS export in each case (from search results and individual articles) is "TY - JOUR", which is correct. I'm not sure why EBSCOhost chooses to show the periodical icon for these items. We may have to reconsider using information from the icon to correct item type inside RIS, but I'll have to look at multiple EBSCOhost databases first to see if we're not significantly decreasing import quality there.
  • I removed the RIS correction for "Periodicals". Update your translators via Preferences -> General -> Update Now, restart browser, and try importing again.

    Yes! That fixed it!

I hope this doesn't have repercussions on other databases.

    Thanks!
