Linked Attachment Base Directory

I do not use the stand alone client and am unfamiliar with this preference: Advanced/Files and Folders/Linked Attachment Base Directory. I am trying to help someone with a work computer and a home computer and they use the standalone client. Would this setting be relevant for sharing/syncing files between these computers? I have a general notion of what relative paths are but how would one set this preference? is there documentation or examples somewhere? Thank you!
  • For syncing a home and office computer, leave that preference alone, store files in Zotero (which is the default if you download from the web or drag to Zotero) and use sync either via webDAV or via Zotero File Storage:
    https://www.zotero.org/support/sync
Files stored in Zotero are always stored in relative paths and will--when they're synce--be accessible across computers, including on different operating systems.

The base directory for relative links is only relevant for people who purposefully do not store files in Zotero, but instead link to them (either manually or using ZotFile). If that's not what you're doing, you'll never use that preference. If you do need it, I have a brief explanation here: http://zoteromusings.wordpress.com/2013/04/11/whats-new-in-zotero-4-0-part-2/
