"Zotero not responding"

This error message is a common response to any effort to type more than one letter into the search window. Typing one letter is OK, but the second letter will often cause a freeze. There may be a thaw eventually, but the second or third letter typed in will again cause the system to freeze up. Symptoms of the freeze vary: almost always the "Zotero not responding" message; sometimes the whole screen is grayed out (not always); the Zotero icon in the Windows 8 toolbar will appear to flex on clicking, but nothing beyond that happens. This is common behavior, on various Windows 7 and 8 machines, not specific to any one of them.
  • This is most likely just due to library size. You might know both of these, but the two best tips here:

    1) Use "Title, Creator, Year" mode, which is the fastest.

    2) Type " before the search to keep it from searching until you press Enter.

You can also try closing the tag selector in the bottom left, which can speed things up. (There's also a more severe issue we're currently debugging with the tag selector on Windows machines with touchscreens or drawing tablets attached, but that's probably not your issue.)

And the "not responding" part isn't really meaningful — that's just due to the way Zotero currently performs long operations. The next major version will keep the UI active in these sorts of cases.
