More than 4 items on folder list from Amazon?

Hi, brand new Zotero user here. I'm trying to import citations for a number of books via a search on Amazon.com. Amazon seems to list 16 books on each result page, but clicking the Zotero folder icon only gives me the top 4 to choose from. I have to click on individual books lower in the list and then click the add to Zotero icon from the individual book page to add them to Zotero. Is there a setting somewhere I can ask Zotero to give me the whole list from the search result page so I don't have to go into each book individually? Thanks for any help.
  • that should just work. Could you post a link to an ammazon.com where that happens for you?
  • Here's the search I just did: http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_noss?url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords=happiness. It gives me 16 items on the Amazon list but only 4 when I click the Zotero folder icon. By the way, I've tried other Amazon search terms and never get more than 4 items from Zotero
  • Update your translators via Preferences -> General -> Update Now and try again. Should be working now.

    Thanks for reporting!
  • Thanks for the quick response! I have updated my translators as you suggest. Sadly, however, I now don't see a zotero folder icon at all on the amazon.com list page (although I still see a file icon on the individual item pages). What am I doing wrong? Is there some sort of additional refresh process i should do? I have closed and reopened Firefox.
  • Looks like translator updates are not entirely working right now. We're looking into it. Will let you know when this is fixed. (though you should still see the folder icon on that page, it just might take a few seconds to show up)
  • Thanks. I'll wait to hear from you. Although you should know I have left the page open for several minutes and the folder icon still doesn't show up...
  • OK, try updating translators again now.
  • Still no folder icon... I have closed Firefox, rebooted my laptop, reset the translators using the button in the Settings->Advanced page, updated the translators and still no joy...
  • I see. Seems to only be affecting Firefox. Looking into it.
  • Thanks. I just checked, and am getting a folder icon on other list pages e.g. Google Scholar
  • FYI, I just installed Zotero on my other pc and the folder icon appears fine on Amazon and gives me a choice of all the books in the list. So clearly the issue is not the translator (now) but updating the translator in my Zotero installation on my laptop. Should I uninstall and reinstall Zotero?
  • Well, this is a bit of a complicated issue.

    (1) Amazon tends to experiment with their users by serving different web content (typically different website layouts) seemingly to random sessions. So one person may visit the same URL and see a different page layout from another user. This doesn't even have to be a different person or a different browser. For example, the URL you posted above was displaying the page with different layouts on the same Firefox browser in two different profiles on my computer (which is why I was able to fix this eventually). Because of the way Zotero works, website layout is very very important, so big changes (these were big changes in the code, though they didn't seem so in the UI) break translators.

    (2) I did release an update for the translator about an hour ago. However, our translator updates are experiencing some issues that won't be fixed until the beginning of the week, so the update didn't go out until recently (likely, right before your last post).

So given above, you either managed to get the update on your newly-installed Zotero (as per 2) or you were being served a different layout of the website on your other computer.

In any case, you should be able to update Zotero translators now on both of your Zotero instances (as described previously) and the translator should work properly on both layouts of the search results. It's likely that Amazon will break this for us again in the future (yay!), so feel free to report. Of course we'll probably end up tearing our hair out looking for a fix, because we won't even be served the same page (<3 u Amazon).

(sorry for the rant... this was frustrating to fix)
  • Wow, I had no idea that Amazon were quite so changeable behind the scenes - although I have actually noticed they've changed the interface a few times and then reverted back to the old one recently. I'm happy to report that yes, the Amazon translator is now working fine on both machines. I really appreciate your fast support and effort on this - at the weekend, too! Many thanks
  • @aurimas

Please do not consider your detailed explanations a "rant". I'm sure that I am not the only reader of this forum to appreciate learning the details of an issue.

hear, hear! I like to know what's going on behind the scenes - it gives me a clearer understanding of how things work. Thanks again!
